Transmission Electron Microscope

This state-of-the-art piece of equipment will enhance the research capabilities and further enable collaboration at CAES. The new TEM is more technologically advanced than any of the current TEM resources across the CAES complex in several ways
• It provides better energy resolution and improved spatial resolution
• It is equipped to better capture the behavior of dynamic materials in harsh environments such as a reactor core
• It is equipped with a broader electron energy range that will enable research on a wide range of materials
The TEM’s placement in the Microscopy and Characterization Suite (MaCS) at CAES will make it accessible to researchers, students, and faculty at the CAES entities, and to researchers worldwide due to MaCS’ Nuclear Science User Facilities status. The project consists of two phases. The first began in July 2020 and focused on modifications to the CAES facility to accommodate the sensitive equipment. The second phase began in March 2021 and focuses on installation of the TEM, which is expected to be operational in summer 2021.
